Just this week, on Monday (June 28), the rapper (real name: Clifford Smith) owed up to the charges, entering a guilty plea in Staten Island Criminal Court to a misdemeanor charge of attempted failure to pay taxes.
In October 2009, Method Man was arrested for unpaid taxes over several years, the highest being over $32,000 in personal and state income tax in one year from between 2004 and 2007
Method Man told the New York Daily News in March 2009 that he simply did not remember to pay because he gets high too much.
“Myself, I’m a pothead,” he said in March. “It’s no secret. Everyone knows that. I go on the road and forget everything else. Sure, [the tax department] sent letters to my house saying, ‘We need this money.’ They started sending them in 2002. … Here it is, 2009, and I never paid this sh** because I don’t think like that!”
